Fortnite Cross-Platform Play Beta Coming To PlayStation 4

In a shockwave that was headed around the world by gamers, Sony has decided not to enable cross-platform play in Fortnite on their PlayStation 4 console. Today it seems the company has had a change of heart and cross-platform play in Fortnite is set to be a reality. This means that Nintendo Switch owners can hook up with their friends on the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC and mobile. So it is bound to benefit Nintendo Switch owners. The big question now is will Sony add cross play to other games ? Only time will tell. Thoughts ?

Sony Doesn’t Do Cross-Platform Play Because PlayStation 4 Is “The Best Experience For Users”

The it comes to cross-platform play with competing consoles, Sony isn’t excalty doing so with open arms. Speaking at the recent IFA technology show in Berlin, Sony chief executive Kenichiro Yoshida explained that the company doesn’t entirely support the feature because it believes the PlayStation 4 provides a superior experience overall. Yoshida did, however, admit that competition with both Nintendo and Microsoft is necessary in order for the industry to continue moving forward.

“On cross-platform, our way of thinking is always that PlayStation is the best place to play. Fortnite, I believe, partnered with PlayStation 4 is the best experience for users, that’s our belief,” he said, according to Press Association. “But actually, we already opened some games as cross-platform with PC and some others, so we decide based on what is the best user experience. That is our way of thinking for cross-platform.” He added: “I think competition is always good. Healthy, fair competition is always good for the industry and growth. I think competition with Nintendo and Xbox is a healthy situation.”

Sony SIE CEO Speaks About Fortnite Cross-Play

Those who have played Fortnite will be aware that Nintendo Switch owners and Xbox One owners can play against each other, but you can’t play with PlayStation 4 users. Sony PR previously gave a rather inadequate statement when asked why, now Eurogamer has managed to ask a question to Shawn Layden, president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment America and chairman of SIE Worldwide Studios during the Gamelab conference in Spain and he told the site the following:

“We’re hearing it. We’re looking at a lot of the possibilities. You can imagine that the circumstances around that affect a lot more than just one game. I’m confident we’ll get to a solution which will be understood and accepted by our gaming community, while at the same time supporting our business.”
