Apple Unexpectedly Updates Its Airport Extreme Software

Apple has released new versions of its router software: 7.6.8 for the 802.11n AirPort Extreme, and 7.7.8 for the 802.11ac AirPort Extreme. According to Apple's release notes, the update fixes an issue where the routers would not respond to the AirPort Utility when "Back to My Mac" is enabled. There are also security fixes. You can install the upgrades via the AirPort Utility. Seems kinda random for Apple to be updated there router after such a long time, specially since it's rumored that they want to discontinue the AirPort line. Thoughts ?

Apple Might Be Discontinuing Its Airport Line Of Products

According to Bloomberg, Apple is abandoning the AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme, and AirPort Time Capsule. The company has disbanded its division that develops wireless routers, in a move to try to sharpen the company's focus on consumer products that generate the bulk of its revenue. The article goes on to say Apple started shutting down the wireless router team over the past year, dispersing engineers to other product development groups, including the one handling the Apple TV. This shouldn’t really be a surprise to anyone as Apple hasn’t refreshed its routers since 2013. They also lags behind to match new standards from the wireless industry.
