WatchOS 10 Gets New Watch Faces, Redesigned Apps And More

Apple unveiled watchOS 10 today at its Worldwide Developer Conference, with new watch faces, updated apps, and a new Smart Stack that shows pertinent widgets only when they are required.

For bikers, there are new metrics, workout views, and Bluetooth connectivity for power meters, speed sensors, and cadence sensors. For hikers, there are new compass waypoints and maps features. The Mindfulness app provides extra resources to help with mental wellness. Currently available as a developer beta, watchOS 10 will become a free software update this autumn.

The Apple Watch display is being used more by apps like Weather, Stocks, Home, Maps, Messages, World Clock, and others to provide more glanceable information. According to Kevin Lynch, Apple's vice president of technology, the Activity app for Apple Watch and the Fitness app on iPhone make monitoring daily movement even easier with additional details, improvements to sharing, a new trophy case, and Apple Fitness+ trainer suggestions.

With a flip of the Digital Crown from any watch face, a new Smart Stack's widgets can be unlocked to deliver timely information that adjusts to the user's context. For instance, Weather might display the forecast in the morning, while the Smart Stack might display boarding tickets from Wallet when you're flying.

Reminders and Calendar will move up to the top to show future events or tasks, and running apps like Podcasts will also move up for easier access. Users can enjoy watch faces like Portraits with Smart Stack while still having rapid access to the information they care about.

The new design language can be used by developers to upgrade their apps. The NBA app makes following a favorite team even more compelling with team colors and new game details, and with Waterllama's redesign, users can quickly glance at their hydration from the last seven days with just a turn of the Digital Crown, according to Lynch. For instance, Streaks now makes use of the entire display to show progress and access tasks.

The side button now makes it possible to swiftly activate Control Center over any app at any moment. Any recently used apps can be accessed by double-clicking the Digital Crown.

NEW WATCH FACE

Palette and Snoopy are two of the new watch faces that come with watchOS 10. The Palette face uses three unique overlapping layers to represent time in a wide range of colors, and as the time changes, so do the colors on the display.

Additionally, a brand-new watch face with images of Snoopy and Woodstock brings the Peanuts comic strip to life on the Apple Watch. The characters converse and play with the watch hands, respond to the local weather, and even become active when the user exercises.

MENTAL HEALTH

Users of watchOS 10 can record their everyday moods and fleeting emotions using the Mindfulness app. Users can choose how they're feeling, determine what is having the largest impact on them, and describe how they're feeling by turning the Digital Crown to scroll among multidimensional shapes.

Users can view insights to determine what may be influencing their state of mind in the Health app in iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 — whether it be associations or lifestyle elements like sleep or exercise. Additionally, the Health app now has access to depression and anxiety exams that are frequently used in clinics. These assessments may be used to identify risk, connect users to local resources, and generate PDFs that can be shared with their doctor.

SIGHT HEALTH

Nearsightedness, or myopia, is the most common cause of vision impairment worldwide. The International Myopia Institute advises kids to spend at least 80 to 120 minutes a day outside to lower their chance of developing myopia. With watchOS 10, Apple Watch adds the capability to use the ambient light sensor to track time spent outdoors. On an iPhone or iPad, users can examine this data in the Health app.

All ages can benefit further from time spent outdoors in terms of their physical and mental wellbeing. Additionally, kids who don't have their own iPhone can use Family Setup to connect their Apple Watch to their parent's iPhone so that their parents can see how much time their children spend outdoors thanks to Health Sharing.

Myopia risk factors include reading too closely and using devices or other objects up close. In order to encourage users to move their smartphone farther away after holding it closer than 12 inches for an extended period of time, Apple claims the new Screen Distance feature makes use of the same TrueDepth camera that underpins Face ID in iPad and iPhone.

When a device is locked with a passcode, Touch ID, or Face ID, all Health app data, including mental health and vision health data, is encrypted.

ACCORDING TO APPLE, ADDITIONAL WATCHOS 10 UPDATES INCLUDE:

  • NameDrop allows users to easily share contact information by bringing Apple Watch close to someone else’s iPhone. Apple Watch users can also use NameDrop by tapping the Share button in My Card in the Contacts app, or by tapping the My Card watch face complication, and then bringing Apple Watch face to face with someone else’s Apple Watch.
  • Offline maps on iPhone provide access to turn-by-turn navigation, estimated time of arrival, places in Maps, and more while away from Wi-Fi or cellular services. These features can also be used on a paired Apple Watch that is in range of its companion iPhone.
  • Users can now initiate playback of a FaceTime® video message and view it directly on Apple Watch. Additionally, Group FaceTime audio is now supported on Apple Watch.
  • The Medications app can send follow-up reminders if a medication hasn’t been logged 30 minutes after the scheduled time.
  • Apple Fitness+ introduces Custom Plans, a new way to receive a custom workout or meditation schedule based on day, duration, workout type, and more; Stacks, which allows users to select multiple workouts and meditations to do seamlessly back to back; and Audio Focus, which gives users the ability to prioritize the volume of the music or the trainers’ voices.
  • Apple Watch offers enterprise customers features to enhance productivity and safety in the office or in the field, such as hands-free communication and responding to notifications on the go, or Fall Detection on a job site. watchOS 10 introduces support for Mobile Device Management (MDM), enabling enterprise customers to remotely and centrally install apps and configure accounts on a fleet of devices, with features such as passcode enforcement, and configuring Wi-Fi and VPN settings. With this update, Apple Watch can further help improve employee wellness, productivity and health, and safety monitoring.

The developer beta of watchOS 10 is available to Apple Developer Program members at developer.apple.com starting today. A public beta will be available to watchOS users next month at beta.apple.com. watchOS 10 will be available this fall as a free software update for Apple Watch Series 4 or later paired with iPhone Xs or later, running iOS 17. Some features may not be available in all regions or all languages, or on all devices. For more information, visit apple.com/watchos/watchos-preview.

Here’s What You Need To Know About The Apple Watch Ultra

Apple has announced a biggie-sized (49mm), ruggedized smartwatch: the Apple Watch Ultra.

According to Apple, it is designed for endurance, exploration, and adventure. The Apple Watch Ultra features a 49mm titanium casing and a flat sapphire front crystal, revealing the largest and brightest Apple Watch display to date. A configurable Action button provides quick access to a variety of options.

Furthermore, the Apple Watch Ultra offers the longest battery life of any Apple Watch, lasting up to 36 hours under typical conditions. There's also a new low-power mode that Apple claims may increase battery life by 60 hours.

The Wayfinder watch face is optimized for the bigger Apple Watch Ultra display and contains a compass incorporated into the dial, as well as capacity for up to eight complications. The Apple Watch Ultra also includes three new bands: Trail Loop, Alpine Loop, and Ocean Band, each with its own design characteristics tailored to how you'll mostly use it, such as diving, jogging, ultramarathons, and so on.

The Apple Watch Ultra's shell rises to encompass all sides of the flat sapphire front crystal, safeguarding the Retina display, which is up to 2000 nits brighter than any other Apple Watch display. The new Action button in high-contrast international orange may be configured to provide quick access to functions such as Workouts, Compass Waypoints, Backtrack, and others.

The Apple Watch Ultra is now available for pre-order at apple.com, with shipping set to begin on Friday, September 23. The purchase includes three months of Apple Fitness+.

Here’s What You Need To Know About The Apple Watch Series 8 And Apple Watch SE Sport

Apple announced the Apple Watch Series 8 and the new Apple Watch SE, both of which include an Always-On Retina display, a crack-resistant front crystal, and other features.

According to Jeff Williams, Apple's chief operations officer, the Apple Watch Series 8 expands on best-in-class health and safety features like the ECG app and fall detection with temperature sensing capabilities, retroactive ovulation estimations, Crash Detection, and international roaming.

The new Apple Watch SE includes the core Apple Watch experience, such as activity tracking, high and low heart rate notifications, and Emergency SOS, as well as a new Crash Detection function and a newly redesigned rear shell. Both models run watchOS 9, which introduces new and more configurable watch faces including Lunar and Metropolitan, as well as an improved Workout app, sleep phases, an AFib History function, and an all-new Medications app. Apple Watch Series 8 and Apple Watch SE are available for pre-order now, with availability commencing on Friday, September 16.

TEMPERATURE SENSOR

The Apple Watch Series 8 features boasts a new temperature-sensing capabilities that provide ladies greater information into their health. Williams claims that their two-sensor design reduces bias from the outside world by placing one sensor on the back of the watch, closest to the skin, and another right under the display.

CRASH DETECTION

To enable Crash Detection, Apple created a sophisticated sensor-fusion algorithm that takes use of a new, more powerful gyroscope and accelerometer on the Apple Watch, which now has the largest dynamic range accelerometer in any wristwatch, according to Williams. Data from these new motion sensors was collected at professional crash test facilities with popular passenger vehicles in simulated real-world collisions, including head-on, rear-end, side-impact, and rollovers, to construct the algorithm. Aside from motion data,

Collision Detection employs the iPhone's barometer, GPS, and microphone as inputs to detect distinctive patterns that might indicate whether a serious crash has occurred. When the Apple Watch senses a serious vehicle accident, it will check in with the user and contact 911 if they are unresponsive after a 10-second countdown. The user's device location is sent to emergency responders and shared with the user's emergency contacts.

When a major automobile collision is detected, the emergency services call interface appears on Apple Watch since it is likely to be closer to the user, but the call is sent through iPhone if it is in range for the best possible connection.

WATCHOS 9 FEATURES

Apple says the latest software, watchOS 9, brings new features and enhanced experiences to the world’s leading wearable operating system:

  • With international roaming coming later this fall, users can stay connected to a cellular network while traveling abroad. Plans can be extended to Apple Watch from iPhone for little or no additional fee and will be available with over 30 carriers worldwide.4
  • Users who are diagnosed with AFib can turn on the FDA-cleared AFib Histor5feature and access important information, including an estimate of how frequently their heart rhythm shows signs of AFib.
  • The completely redesigned Compass app in watchOS 9 surfaces more in-depth information and three distinct views. The app displays a new hybrid view that simultaneously shows both an analog compass dial and a digital view. Turning the Digital Crown reveals an additional view that includes latitude, longitude, elevation, and incline, as well as an orienteering view showing Compass Waypoints and Backtrack.
  • The Workout app in watchOS 9 includes new in-session views, such as Segments, Splits, and Elevation, that offer more precise workout data. Users can also improve their training with advanced workout experiences, including Heart Rate Zones, Custom Workouts, Pacer, and, coming later this year,
  • Sleep tracking in watchOS 9 provides even more insights with the introduction of sleep stages. Apple Watch uses signals from the accelerometer and heart rate sensor to estimate when users are in REM, Core, or Deep sleep. Sleep stage data can be viewed directly on Apple Watch in the Sleep app, and users can view more detailed information in the Health app on iPhone, including interactive sleep stages charts, as well as time asleep alongside heart rate or respiratory rate, in sleep comparison charts.
  • The new Medications experience on Apple Watch and iPhone helps users manage and track their medications, vitamins, and supplements, allowing them to create a medications list, set up schedules and reminders, and view information on their medications in the Health app.

watchOS 9 Brings New Watch Faces, Richer Complications, Updates To The Workout App, And More

Apple previewed watchOS 9, which has new features and additional watch faces to pick from, as well as deeper complications that give more information and personalization options.

Advanced stats, perspectives, and training experiences inspired by high-performing athletes are included in the new Workout app to help users take their workouts to the next level.

The Sleep app now includes sleep phases in watchOS 9, and a new FDA-cleared AFib History function gives more information about a user's condition. The new Drugs app allows users to manage, understand, and monitor medications in a straightforward and unobtrusive manner.

“Users around the world love Apple Watch for helping them stay connected to those they love, be more active throughout the day, and better manage their health,” says Jeff Williams, Apple’s chief operating officer. “This fall, watchOS 9 takes the Apple Watch experience to the next level with scientifically validated insights across fitness, sleep, and heart health, while providing users more creative ways to make their Apple Watch their own.”

More Watch Faces

watchOS 9 introduces four new faces: Lunar, which depicts the relationship between the Gregorian calendar and lunar calendar, used in many cultures such as Chinese, Islamic, and Hebrew; Playtime, a dynamic piece of art that’s unique to Apple Watch and created in collaboration with artist Joi Fulton; Metropolitan, a classic, type-driven watch face where the style changes as the Digital Crown is rotated; and Astronomy, an original face that has been completely remastered and features a new star map and current cloud data.

watchOS 9 introduces enhanced and modernized complications on some classic watch faces, such as Utility, Simple, and Activity Analog, along with background color editing for Modular, Modular Compact, and X-Large for additional personalization.

The new Portraits face showcases the depth effect on more photos, including cats, dogs, and landscapes, while Chinese scripts have been added as options for California and Typograph watch faces. Focus now allows users to select an Apple Watch face to automatically appear when they start a specific Focus on iPhone, such as the Photos face during a Personal Focus, helping users stay in the moment.

Workout App Updates

The Workout app has been updated to provide richer metrics for measuring performance, as well as new training experiences to help users reach fitness goals. The in-session display now uses the Digital Crown to rotate between easy-to-read Workout Views, so users can see important metrics for different training styles. Heart Rate Zones, which can be manually created or automatically calculated using personalized Health data, can be used to monitor the intensity of a workout.

In watchOS 9, the Workout app introduces Custom Workouts, which can be used to create a structured workout that can include work and rest intervals. New alerts, including pace, power, heart rate, and cadence, can be added to guide users throughout the workout.

For triathletes, the Workout app now supports a new Multisport workout type that automatically switches between any sequence of swimming, biking, and running workouts, using motion sensors to recognize movement patterns. When each workout is complete, a redesigned summary page in the Fitness app offers additional details with interactive charts for more precise analysis.

First-of-Its-Kind AFib History

Currently, the ECG app and irregular rhythm notification on Apple Watch can identify potential signs of atrial fibrillation (AFib). Left untreated, AFib is one of the leading conditions that can result in stroke.

Research suggests that the amount of time spent in AFib may impact a person’s symptoms, overall quality of life, and risk of complications. Previously, there’s not been an easy way to track the frequency of AFib over an extended period of time, or to manage lifestyle factors that may influence one’s condition. According to the American Heart Association, addressing modifiable lifestyle factors may decrease the amount of time spent in AFib.1

With watchOS 9, users who are diagnosed with AFib can turn on the FDA-cleared AFib History feature2 and access important information, including an estimate of how frequently a user’s heart rhythm shows signs of AFib, providing deeper insights into their condition.

Users will also receive weekly notifications to understand frequency and view a detailed history in the Health app, including lifestyle factors that may influence AFib, like sleep, alcohol consumption, and exercise.

Users can download a PDF with a detailed history of their AFib and lifestyle factors, which can easily be shared with doctors and care providers for more informed conversations.

Medications

The new Medications experience on Apple Watch and iPhone helps users manage and track their medications, vitamins, and supplements, allowing them to create a medications list, set up schedules and reminders, and view information on their medications in the Health app. Williams says the Medications app on Apple Watch makes it easy for users to conveniently and discreetly track medications anytime, anywhere.

Custom schedules can be created for each medication, whether it needs to be taken multiple times a day, once a week, or as needed, and users can set up reminders to help keep them on track. In the US, users can receive an alert if there are potential critical interactions with medications they have added to the Health app.

Privacy

Privacy is fundamental in the design and development across all of Apple’s features. When a user’s iPhone is locked with a passcode, Touch ID, or Face ID, all of their health and fitness data in the Health app — other than Medical ID — is encrypted. Any Health data backed up to iCloud is encrypted both in transit and on Apple servers.

Additional watchOS 9 updates, according to Apple:

  • Staying informed in the moment is a powerful part of the Apple Watch experience, and in watchOS 9, notifications have been redesigned to be less interruptive while still being impactful, arriving with new slimline banners when Apple Watch is being actively used.
  • Family Setup now supports the Home app so a child can be invited as a member to control HomePod speakers and smart home accessories.4 They can also use home keys and hotel keys in Apple Wallet.
  • With new Quick Actions on Apple Watch, users can do even more with a double-pinch gesture, including answer or end a phone call, take a photo, play or pause media in the Now Playing app, and start, pause, or resume a workout. This builds on the innovative technology used in AssistiveTouch on Apple Watch, which gives users with upper body limb differences the option to control Apple Watch with gestures like a pinch or a clench without having to tap the display.
  • Apple Watch becomes more accessible than ever for people with physical and motor disabilities with Apple Watch Mirroring, which helps users control Apple Watch remotely from their paired iPhone. With Apple Watch Mirroring, users can drive Apple Watch using iPhone’s assistive features like Voice Control and Switch Control — so they can navigate Apple Watch by using their voice, sound actions, head tracking, and external Made for iPhone switches as alternatives to tapping the Apple Watch display.5 Apple Watch Mirroring uses hardware and software integration, along with advances built on AirPlay, to ensure users who rely on these mobility features can benefit from unique Apple Watch apps like Blood Oxygen, Heart Rate, Mindfulness, and more.
  • The QWERTY keyboard on Apple Watch Series 7 adds support for French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese (Brazil), and Spanish (Mexico, Spain, Latin America).
  • Apps that are actively in use are now promoted over the rest of the apps in the redesigned Dock, making it easier for users to quickly return to them.
  • The Reminders app now lets users add or edit key details such as date and time, location, tags, and notes.
  • Stay productive with the updated Calendar app by creating new events directly from Apple Watch. For the first time, users can access a Week view in addition to updated List, Day, and Month views to support more scrolling through calendar events.
  • Cardio Recovery is a useful fitness metric that can be an indicator of cardiovascular health. Apple Watch now provides estimates of Cardio Recovery after an Outdoor Walk, Run, or Hiking workout, even when the workout does not reach peak intensity. This metric can be tracked over time in the Health app.
  • New APIs allowdevelopers to build best-in-class third-party apps, with CallKit and share sheet support, access to Photos picker, and the ability to integrate watchOS apps with Apple TV.

The developer beta of watchOS 9 is available to Apple Developer Program members at developer.apple.com. A public beta will be available to watchOS users next month at beta.apple.com. watchOS 9 will be available this fall as a free software update for Apple Watch Series 4 or later paired with iPhone 8 or later and iPhone SE (second generation) or later, running iOS 16. Some features may not be available in all regions or all languages, or on all devices. Features are subject to change. For more information, visit apple.com/watchos/watchos-preview.

Apple Watch Series 7 Releasing This Fall

Apple announced the Apple Watch Series 7 is coming this fall. The Apple Watch Series 7 packs a reengineered Always-On Retina display with significantly more screen area and thinner borders. The narrower borders allow the display to maximize screen area, while minimally changing the dimensions of the watch itself.

Apple says the design of Apple Watch Series 7 is refined with softer, more rounded corners, while the display has a unique refractive edge that makes full-screen watch faces and apps appear to seamlessly connect with the curvature of the case. The Apple Watch Series 7 also features a user interface optimized for the larger display, plus two unique watch faces — Contour and Modular Duo — designed specifically for the new device. With the improvements to the display, users benefit from the same all-day 18-hour battery life, now complemented by 33% faster charging.

Apple Watch Series 7 introduces five beautiful new aluminum case finishes, along with a range of new band colors and styles. The entire Apple Watch Series 7 lineup will be available later this fall. Jeff Williams, Apple’s chief operating officer, says the display of Apple Watch Series 7 offers nearly 20% more screen area and thinner borders at just 1.7 mm — 40% smaller than those on Apple Watch Series 6. Through a design that maximizes the screen area while minimally changing the dimensions of the overall case size, it’s available in 41mm and 45mm sizes. While the wrist is down, the Always-On Retina display is up to 70% brighter indoors than that of Apple Watch Series 6, making it easier to see the watch face without having to lift the wrist or wake the display, says Williams.

The user interface is optimized to take advantage of the shape and size of the new display. Apple Watch Series 7 offers two additional larger font sizes, and a new QWERTY keyboard that can be tapped or swiped with QuickPath — allowing users to slide a finger to type — and utilizes on-device machine learning to anticipate the next word based on the context, making text entry easier and faster. With watchOS 8, larger menu titles and buttons in apps like Stopwatch, Activity, and Alarms also make the screen even simpler to interact with.

PRICING AND AVAILABILITY

  • All Apple Watch Series 7 models will be available later this fall.
  • Apple Watch Series 7 will start at $399 Apple Watch SE starts at $279 and Apple Watch Series 3 starts at $199. Apple Watch SE with USB-C charging cable, new Apple Watch bands, and Apple Watch Nike bands will be available to order today from apple.com/store
