The Tears Of Joy Emoji (😂) Tops The List Of Most Used Emojis In 2021

The last few years haven't been easy for the majority of people, but if the world's most popular emojis are any indication, we're still in high spirits. The top ten most-used emoji, according to the Unicode Consortium, are basically identical from last year (the organization didn't produce a list last year).

The Tears of Joy (😂) emoji was once again king. It accounted for 5% of total emoji usage. It was also the most tweeted emoji last year and the most popular in 2019.

The only emoji that comes close to Tears of Joy's popularity, according to the Unicode Consortium, is the Red Heart (❤️). The following are the rest of this year's top ten most-used emojis, all of which have a positive connotation:

New Emojis For 2019 Have Been Revealed

This years new Unicode emojis have been revealed,59 to be precise. You'll have to wait a while to see them. Unicode says new emoji "typically" arrive in September and October, or right around when Apple and Google release major OS updates. You might have to wait later still if your Android device maker doesn't provide updates right away. Check out ever new emoji in the video below. 

Apple Shows Off Some New Emojis In iOS 11

Apple has given emoji fans a tease of the 56 new emojis that are coming to iOS 11. The emoji include new smiley faces, more diversity options and new animals. There's the addition of a sandwich emoji as well as mythical creatures, such as a zombie, and a T-Rex. 

New Emojis Are On The Way

New emojis are on the way as the Unicode Consortium has released its next batch of emoji and text characters. The finalized set of 56 emoji includes a slew of outlandish people and beasts, including zombies, vampires, fairies and dinosaurs. Don't expect to use any of these new characters right away. Your device operating system will need an update to recognize them, and there's a good chance you'll be waiting a while. You'll likely have to wait until Android O to see them on a Google-powered phone, while the iPhone and iPad users will likely have to sit tight until iOS 11. Microsoft Changed Its Ray Gun Emoji To A Real Gun

It appears that Microsoft is doing the opposite of apple as after it changed its gun emoji to a water pistol in iOS 10, Microsoft replaced its toy pistol emoji with an a real looking gun. This was noticed as its Windows Anniversary Update became available on August 2. This was a part of a major emoji redesign that Microsoft detailed in a blog post. Before this, the company's representation for a gun looked more like a space ray gun, while the new image is a more realistic. What do you think of Microsoft doing this ? Seems inserting that each company is doing the opposite of the other. Usually one company copies the other. 

New Emoji’s Are Coming In iOS 10

There will also be an additional 100 new and redesigned emoji that will be available to iPhone and iPad users this Fall with iOS 10. These new emoji show women playing more sports and performing jobs that, before this update. A few examples are a woman riding a mountain bike, lifting weights, and playing basketball. There will also be redesigns of popular emoji, a new rainbow flag, and more family options. Apple is also replacing its gun emoji with a more friendlier looking water pistol. This is in an effort to bring more gender and race options to existing characters. Apple, Unicode, Google, and other companies have the power to promote change, and making important tweaks to a popular way people communicate on their phones is one way to do it.

72 New Emojis Are Coming To A Smartphone Near You

The Unicode emoji library just got bigger with 72 new emojis. When version 9.0 is released in June, selfie, shrug, facepalm, bacon, avocado and  so much more  new emoji will be added. Even though the new additions will be included in Unicode this month, you'll still have to wait until Apple and Google add them to their software.
