Nintendo Reveals More Details About Nintendo World Championships 2017

Nintendo has announced some exciting new details about the upcoming Nintendo World Championships 2017. Thousands of competitors across the country competed in seven regional qualifiers, with 16 top players across two age brackets qualifying to travel to New York to compete against one another in Nintendo World Championships on Oct. 7. The event is a multi-game tournament that challenges players of all ages to compete in a gauntlet of games representing the past and present of Nintendo games and systems that fans will know and love. Today, Nintendo revealed just one of the many games to be included the tournament: the recently released Metroid: Samus Returns game for the Nintendo 3DS family of systems.

“Nintendo World Championships 2017 is more than just another video game tournament,” said Doug Bowser, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “It is a celebration of Nintendo games old and new, and Nintendo fans past and present. Kids, parents and gamers of all ages will be thrilled by the excitement of seeing who will come out on top.”

Included among the qualifying players are a few dedicated competitors who traveled to multiple locations across the country to secure their spot in the tournament, as well as the winner of the Nintendo World Championships 2015, who earned his way back in to defend his title. The 16 qualifying players will be joined by 8 players invited to compete from across the country and around the world, including talented speed-runners, tournament players and online personalities from the United States, Europe, Canada and Mexico. These invitees include actor and Super Smash Bros. tournament player Asa Butterfield and WWE Superstar Bayley.

When the big event kicks off in New York on Oct. 7, it will be hosted by Nintendo fan and online personality Andrea Rene, with play-by-play and analysis by gamer, sports broadcaster and Nintendo fan Jordan Kent.

The Nintendo World Championships 2017 event will be livestreamed at https://nwc.nintendo.comstarting at 5 p.m. ET/2 p.m. PT on Oct. 7. Fans who are already in New York will have the opportunity to witness all the action in person. A limited number of free tickets will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis outside Manhattan Center’s Grand Ballroom the day of the event (minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian).

After advancing through the tournament, you are about to start the finals. If you win this round, you will be named the Nintendo World Championships 2017 tournament winner. Your heart is beating. The competition begins…

This triumphant scenario might sound like a dream for any Nintendo fan, but it could actually be a reality! With the Nintendo World Championships 2017 tournament, taking place on Oct. 7 in New York at Manhattan Center’s Grand Ballroom, fans of all ages from around the country have the chance to be a part of Nintendo history.Following its debut in 1990, the Nintendo World Championships made a grand return at E3 2015 in Los Angeles. The Nintendo World Championships finds fans of all ages and walks of life competing in a variety of Nintendo games, both recent and retro. Here’s how it all works: Starting on Aug. 19, select Best Buy stores around the country will host qualifying events in eight locations around the country. Players will be divided into two groups based on their age, and both groups will play Mario Kart 7 for the Nintendo 3DS family of systems. The first age group, 12 and Younger, will play as Mario on the Nintendo DS “Luigi’s Mansion” course using Standard Kart, Standard Wheels and Super Glider. The second age group, 13 and Older, will play as Bowser on the Game Boy Advance “Bowser Castle 1” course using Standard Kart, Standard Wheels and Super Glider. The player with the best Time Trial entry in each age group at the end of the two-day event at each location will qualify for the Nintendo World Championships 2017!

Additionally, anyone who visits these events at Best Buy will be able to try demo versions of the Super Mario Odyssey game, launching Oct. 27 for the Nintendo Switch system and the Metroid: Samus Returns game for the Nintendo 3DS family of systems, arriving on Sept. 15. Plus, visitors who are My Nintendo members will be able to check in using their My Nintendo QR Code at any of the qualifier event locations to receive 100 Platinum Points. My Nintendo members who are one of the first 200 to check in daily at each location will receive a My Nintendo pin as an added bonus. During the Nintendo World Championships event in New York, players will battle their way through a variety of games where they will be eliminated or will advance their way through the tournament based on their performance. “The format of the Nintendo World Championships means that anyone has a chance to become the winner,” said Doug Bowser, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “Audiences are hungry to watch competitive video games in action, and many of our most classic games, both old and new, are well-suited to competition by players of all ages.”

Splatoon Will Be Featured At The Nintendo World Championships 2015

This year's Nintendo World Championships will feature Splatoon as 1 of the 8 games included in the tournament. Its also the wrist time Splatoon will be featured in a tournament. In a new announcement video, Nintendo also revealed that Kevin Pereira will be the event's official host. Also several well known gamers have been invited to participate in the tournament, and will join the 8 winners who come out on top from the Best Buy qualifiers. The Legend Of Zelda For NES To Be At The Nintendo World Championships

Nintendo has announced that the Legend of Zelda for the NES will be one of the games that the 16 finalists will be competing in at The Nintendo World Championships. Nintendo isn't ready to reveal how players will be competing, well have to stay tuned until the event. The Nintendo World Championships 2015 are set to take place at 3 p.m. Pacific on Sunday, June 14. 

Here Are The Rules And Locations For The Nintendo World Championship Qualifiers

The Nintendo World Championships will return this year after a 25-year hiatus. The competition will involve the championship mode from Ultimate NES Remix, with score challenges culled from Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, and Dr. Mario. In addition to the top scorer from each location, Nintendo will be selecting 8 additional competitors for the finals. The Los Angeles event will include multiple rounds. On May 30, you can compete in one of 8 locations to win a trip to Los Angeles to compete in the final field of 16 players. Qualifiers will take place at the following Best Buy locations from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. local time on May 30. The Nintendo World Championships will be held on June 14 at the Nokia Theatre.
