GameStop Wants To Sell You Pre Owned Digital Games

Back in July 2012, GameStop CEO Paul Raines revealed that his company was interested in applying its famous "buy, sell, trade" model to digital content. Now in 2015 GameStop remains interested in this move, "It's still an opportunity that's out there," GameStop merchandising director Eric Bright told GameSpot at E3 last month. According to Bright, "digital penetration is still at its infancy overall" across the video game industry. But one day in the future, you might be able to buy pre owned digital games from GameStop. Selling digital content is already commonplace in some PC games. But on consoles, digital content is often licensed to one profile, and then it cannot be transferred. What do you think ? GameStop Believes Digital Games Are Too Cheap

GameStop believes that digital games could drive game prices dangerously low, according to the company's president Tony Bartel. Bartel said that GameStop estimates that $100 million worth of games have been digitally delivered for free as part of hardware bundles like the Xbox One Bundle 's and the PlayStation 4  Bundle's. "We want to help ensure that our industry does not make the same mistake as other entertainment categories by driving the perceived value of digital goods significantly below that of a physical game.” When the free digital token programs end, we believe that the industry will need to work together to continue to price goods in a way that sustains profitability and encourages a great innovation that this category needs."

Wal-Mart Will Sell Used Games Soon

Staring on November 3 Walmart will begin selling pre-owned games on November 3 in 1,700 stores across the U.S. Wal-Mart shoppers were able to trade in used games at Walmart from March 26 in return for a credit voucher that could be used in any Walmart or Sam's Club both in store and online. The program does not currently offer the option of receiving cash for game trade-ins, nor accept video game hardware.

GameStop May Start Selling Used DLC

Gamestop is interested in selling used DLC as Gamestop's Executive Vice President Mike Hogan spoke about this at the third annual GameStop Expo. "Selling used DLC would require a partnership between retailers and publishers, but absolutely, it could go that way. We're absolutely interested in pursuing that, there are lots of examples where people have taken digital content and made it transferable from one consumer to another." This happens all the time in games like World of Warcraft and Dota 2, where players routinely buy, sell, and trade virtual goods. But most digital content, especially on consoles, is licensed to one user and can't be transferred.
