iOS 8 Adoption Rate Is Now At 73%

According to Apple’s own data,  iOS 8 adoption rate is now at 73% iOS 7 is of course behind at 24%, and 3% of devices are running a software version that 2 or more years old. For comparison, iOS 7 was installed on 80% of devices at the same time last year. What is it about iOS 8 that’s making people not updating ?

iOS 9 To Focus On Optimization And Stability

After the UI changes and new features with iOS 7 and iOS 8, Apple seems to be changing their focus for the upcoming iOS 9. According to a new report the next major version of the iPhone and iPad software will mainly focus on stability and optimization. For 2015, iOS 9, which is codenamed Stowe  is going to include a collection of under the hood improvements. Sources tell us that iOS 9 engineers are putting a huge focus on fixing bugs, maintaining stability, and boosting performance for the new operating system, rather than solely focusing on delivering major new feature additions. Apple will also continue to make efforts to keep the size of the OS and updates manageable, especially for the many millions of iOS device owners with 16GB devices. iOS 9 will likely be unveiled at WWDC in June of this year. Apple currently has two versions of iOS 8 in development. The main feature of iOS 8.2 is support for the upcoming Apple Watch. The first beta version of iOS 8.3 was released to developers earlier today.

63% Of iOS Devices Are Now Running iOS 8

New data shows that 63% of iOS devices are now running iOS 8. The data shows that the adoption rate has gained 3 % since November 24, which was the last time Apple shared that data. Although the adoption rate of iOS 8 has been slower than previous major annual software releases, it seems that it’s slowly but surely picking up steam. In terms of adoption rate of previous software versions, iOS 7 is a distant number 2 with 33%, and iOS 6 and earlier versions represent a small 4%. For comparison, at about the same time last year, iOS 7 adoption rate was at 74%.

iOS 8 Is Now Installed On 52% Of All iOS Devices

 New information from the Apple Developer Support pages shows that iOS 8 is now installed on 52 % of all iOS devices. Of the other 48 % of iOS devices, 43 % are running versions of iOS 7, while only 5 % are running older versions of iOS. The newest edition of iOS, version 8.1, may be the cause for even more users to switch their devices to iOS 8 since it includes some much needed bug fixes that were not available in earlier releases.

You Can No Longer Downgrade To iOS 7

Before now, iOS device owners running iOS 8 were able to manually downgrade to iOS 7.1.2 from inside iTunes. Apple stopped this feature on September 26. The adoption rate for iOS 8 is significantly lower than those of last year’s iOS 7 and the previous year’s iOS 6. If you’re running iOS 8 on any of your iOS devices and don’t like the experience, there’s no going back. Though the experiences with iOS 8 isn’t that different from iOS 7.
