PlayStation VR To Be The Same Price As A New Gaming Platform

Sony's virtual reality headset, PlayStation VR, will apparently be priced as a new gaming platform, according to Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House in an interview with Bloomberg. "VR rewrites the rule book on how you can create games. You’re seeing a large amount of interest and work happening among smaller teams, because it’s possible to create something in VR that is very simple but still very magical." PlayStation VR is set to release within the first half of 2016. So are we talking $300 to $400 for PlayStation VR ? What do you think of that idea ? Note I’m just taking a guess and that is not the confirmed price point.

Sony’s VR Headset To Arrive In First Half of 2016

Sony has giving an update on Project Morpheus at GDC. The near final version of what Project Morpheus will look like can be seen below. Also, we finally have a release window for Project Morpheus. Sony project that Morpheus will see consumer availability in the first half of 2016. Sony reiterated a number of the specifications with which we were already familiar, but listed off  the new specifications. Sony is also addressing smooth transition in and out of the head mounted display. This is important to see the controller in your hand or even acknowledge someone else that in the room. Sony is also addressing one of the big challenges of virtual reality: smooth transition in and out of the head-mounted display. This is important to see the controller in your hand (or on your side table), pick up a drink, or acknowledge someone else in the room.
Here's what we know about the near final version of Project Morpheus.

  • OLED Display
  • 1920x1080 pixels with RGB subpixels to reduce motion blur
  • Morpheus is designed to render at 120 frames-per-second, within the capabilities of the PlayStation 4
  • There is also an option to render at 60 frames-per-second, but reach the 120 FPS target using a technique called "re-projection"
  • Re-projection uses sensor data to create an in-between frame to boost the rate from 60 to 120.
  • Sony says latency, a key factor for smooth virtual reality displays, is sub-18 millisecond
  • Screen size is 5.7 inches, with a 100 degree field of view
  • Sony has added three more tracking LEDs from the unit it unveiled at GDC last year, bringing the number from six to nine
  • The design has been tweaked and rebalanced to put more of the weight on top of the head for comfort

PS4 VR Headset Almost Ready For Release

Sony has said to have completed 85 % of the work to release the PlayStation 4 virtual reality headset, Project Morpheus. PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida spoke with The Wall Street Journal at the Tokyo Game Show this week in Japan. Yoshida did not say what the remaining 15 % of Morpheus development will require. Yoshida did say the hardware itself has areas we can improve upon to bring it to an even higher level. He also said previously that Sony will not release Morpheus until there is a sufficient software lineup in place. Yoshida mentioned that the target for Morpheus will be PS4 owners, Sony sees VR overall as a technology that could have broad applications, in markets outside of games. This broad appeal could in lead to a rise in PS4 sales. "We are hoping that once we introduce Project Morpheus to the market, the attractiveness of PS4 will increase and the PS4 could be received by many more people who are not necessarily core gamers" Yoshida said. Sony’s VR headset Project Morpheus (still a working title) doesn’t have a release date at this time.
