Nintendo Switch set two new records from Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday: It became the best-selling Nintendo console in U.S. history for that five-day period, surpassing even Wii system sales. Nintendo Switch also had its best-selling week ever in the United States. In fact, according to Adobe Analytics, Nintendo Switch was among the most-purchased items online on Thanksgiving Day and the overall top-selling video game product online for the Black Friday-Cyber Monday time period.
Strong demand resulted in shoppers buying more than $250 million in Nintendo products from Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday, according to Nintendo’s internal sales figures, demonstrating that Nintendo has something for everyone this holiday season. That sales total accounts for video game systems like Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo 3DS family of systems, retro systems like Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition and Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition, as well as all Nintendo-produced games and accessories. Total U.S. hardware sales for Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday increased 45 percent over the same period in 2017.
And that doesn’t even take into account that one of the most anticipated video game events of the year is still to come: the Dec. 7 launch of the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate game. As previously announced, the game has become not only the most pre-sold Nintendo Switch game of all time, but also the most pre-sold Super Smash Bros. game ever in the series.

Nintendo Switch
Nintendo Switch hardware sales grew 115 percent compared to the same period in 2017.
Lifetime sales of Nintendo Switch, which is entering only its second holiday season, have reached more than 8.2 million units.
Sales of first-party games, including digital downloads, topped 1 million units Nov. 22-26, beating 2017’s totals by 78 percent.
Thanks in part to strong Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday sales, the total installed base for the Nintendo 3DS family of systems has hit 22 million.
Additionally, after 12 months of availability, lifetime combined sales of the Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon games crossed 2.2 million.

Also aided by strong Nov. 22-26 sales, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition system surpassed lifetime sales of 2.5 million.
And the Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition system surpassed lifetime sales of 2 million.
According to NPD analyst Mat Piscatella, “Nintendo Switch was the only platform that produced software sales growth in June, with dollar sales more than doubling those of June 2017. Year-to-date software sales on Nintendo Switch are also more than double those of a year ago”.
But wait there’s more. The NES Classic had some success of its own, becoming the month’s #1 selling hardware. VentureBeat relayed the news that “Sony’s PlayStation 4 was the best-selling console and remains the top platform year-to-date, but Microsoft and Nintendo also saw their sales increase. Year-over-year, Xbox One made almost twice and the Switch sold more than 50 percent. Nintendo also sold the most consoles with its NES Classic”. Piscatella says that “this is the first time a Nintendo Entertainment System console has led in monthly unit sales since NPD tracking began in 1995”.
Nintendo has confirmed via Twitter that the NES Classic Edition will be returning on June 29th. They also said that this and the SNES Classic Edition are “expected to be available through the end of the year”. In Japan, Famicom Minis will return to stores on the 28th.
Due to incredible demand for the upcoming Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition system, Nintendo plans to ship the retro-inspired product into 2018. Originally, shipments were announced to cease at the end of this calendar year.
In addition, more units of Super NES Classic Edition will ship on its Sept. 29 launch day in the U.S. than were shipped of NES Classic Edition all last year, with subsequent shipments arriving in stores regularly. Fans have shown their unbridled enthusiasm for these Classic Edition systems, so Nintendo is working to put many more of them on store shelves.
The Super NES Classic Edition system features 21 legendary Super NES games such as Super Mario World, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and Super Metroid. Launching on Sept. 29 at a suggested retail price of only $79.99, Super NES Classic Edition plugs directly into the TV using the provided HDMI cable, and comes with two wired controllers. Nintendo of America has confirmed to IGN that they’re discontinuing the NES Mini. The last shipments of the system will go out to retailers at the end of the month. This is disappointing news to many but Nintendo of America says it was never meant to be an ongoing, long-term product. Thoughts ?

During a Corporate Management Policy Briefing Nintendo recently held, the company revealed some new details on the success of the NES Classic Edition. The device sold 1.5 million units across the world and continues to be difficult to find in stores (Unless you live in NYC, looking at you Nintendo NY). In the briefing, Nintendo shed a little light on exactly why that is.
“In November last year, we brought back the nostalgic Famicom and NES home consoles in palm- sized versions and shipped the entire quantity of Nintendo Classic Mini Family Computer units we initially prepared for each market. We apologize to our consumers and retail partners for the inconvenience caused by product shortages. Some parts require time to procure, but we are working to increase production. We also see the nostalgic interest in these products as an opportunity to draw consumers’ attention to our latest game system, Nintendo Switch”.
Well, it only took a few months for hackers to jailbreak the tiny console known as the NES Classic. While Nintendo have said there are no more games coming to the system, these modders can add as many NES games as they want. However, it’s still early days and there are doubts that every NES game will function properly on the simplified console. Best Buy has sent an email to let customers know that the NES Classic Edition will soon be restocked. The console will be available at “all Best Buy stores” on December 20, according to the email. Amazon has also hinted at restocking the NES Classic.
Amazon is teasing something they will be sharing related to the NES Classic Edition in the coming week. The company’s video game sector has a “couple exciting announcements” to make regarding the popular console. I smell an Amazon restock of the NES Classic Edition coming soon. Thoughts ?

The highly-anticipated NES Classic Edition released on November 11, and it looks like many Nintendo fans were unable to get their hands on one. Nintendo of America has issued the following statement on the seemingly rampant sellouts, assuring that more consoles will become available at participating retailers in the coming weeks: “As recently posted by Nintendo on the Wii U website in Japan, Wii U production will end in the near future for the Japanese domestic market. We have nothing to announce in terms of exact timing. We can confirm that as of today, all Wii U hardware that will be made available in the North American market for this fiscal year has already been shipped to our retail partners. We encourage anyone who wants Wii U to communicate with their preferred retail outlet to monitor availability.”

On launch weekend (November 11-13), Nintendo is also bringing back its righteously nostalgic Power Line for three days only.
On November 10 and November 11, its social media channels will go completely retro to a time when “social media” involved trading passwords and game tips on the school bus.
Are you ready to go back in time? Grab your neon sunglasses and jelly bracelets. Things are about to get radical. To kick off the launch, Nintendo will host a “Remembering #NESterday” social media takeover starting on November 10. The first 250 visitors can play classic NES games, participate in a costume contest dressed as their favorite Nintendo characters or ’80s icons, and show off their NES knowledge in the ultimate retro Nintendo game show. When the clock ticks over to midnight on November 11, the one-handed gloves come off and the NES Classic Edition will be available to purchase, while supplies last.
While playing one of the 30 great NES games included on the NES Classic Edition during the weekend following the Friday launch, you might find yourself puzzled by some of the more challenging games.
