During Activision Blizzard’s earnings call, the publisher revealed that there will not be a Skylanders game for consoles this year. However, there will be a mobile title, and a port of Imaginators will be coming to the Nintendo Switch. A second season of Netflix's Skylanders show, Skylanders Academy is set to release in 2017, while a third season has been ordered by Netflix.
According to journalist Liam Robertson, the Skylanders franchise could be coming to an end due to declining series sales. The franchise could follow in the footsteps of Disney Infinity which was canceled earlier this year for similar reasons. The toys-to-life market has suffered in recent times with reports suggesting that consumer interest has gone.
Activision has revealed that players will be able to work on their Skylander creations away from the game by using an app. Once you’re finished, you can bring your new Skylander to life on a shirt, NFC card, or via a limited-edition 3D printout. Skylanders Creator is the app, and it’s coming to iOS and Android devices. It will be avaialbe for free and you can get to work on your own creations, either by importing and tweaking the Skylanders you’ve already made in the console game, or completely from scratch. Players can also look at their creations in 3D and share their designs with friends and family. If you really, really like your Skylander, you can also order a T-shirt with the character, its name, class, and element type printed on it in color for $24.99. You can transfer your creation from the app to the appropriate Skylander crystal, or you have a couple of other options. For $14.99, you can order a trading card of your character, called an Imaginator Card. The card shows off your hero, and it also serves double duty as a functional Skylander. Put it on the Portal of Power, and it will go into the game just like any off-the-shelf figure. If you want a 3D-printed figure of your Skylander for $49.99. They’re not meant to be played with, but they’re a faithful model of your in-game hero. It also works in the game. Both the 3D figure and Imaginator Card will take between 2-3 weeks to arrive, and the figure in particular is only available in limited quantities. Skylanders Imaginators is set to release on October 16.

Other talent announced for the show including Susan Sarandon (Thelma & Louise), Daniel Wu (Warcraft), Parker Posey (Scream 3), James Hetfield (Metallica), Catherine O’Hara (Home Alone), Bobcat Goldthwait (Sleeping Dogs Lie) and Harland Williams (Dumb and Dumber) among others. Skylanders Imaginators introduces Skylanders Senseis, all-new heroes who represent 10 powerful Battle Classes such as Knight, Sorcerer, Bowslinger, Brawler, and more. Skylanders Senseis help train created Imaginators by offering a range of benefits including unlocking super-cool Imaginator weapons, providing access to special areas in the game, as well as bestowing Secret Techniques across the Battle Classes. First up, is a cartoon series based around the Skylanders. Activision has announced Skylanders Battlecast, which is a free to play card battle game. Battlecast cards will be available digitally and physically. The cards will have an AR effect when scanned into the game. Characters can also duel when scanned together. Skylanders Battlecast will launches with competitive PVP multiplayer and a campaign. Skylanders Battlecast is coming to iOS and Android in 2016.

The game will incorporate Amiibo support for 4 figures designed specifically for the game. There will be 2 characters and 2 vehicles, keeping in line with the Skylanders Superchargers theme. Turbo Charge Donkey Kong and his Battle Baster and Hammer Slam Bowser and his Clown Cruiser will be available this fall for use in Skylanders Superchargers. Donkey Kong and Bowser will function as regular Amiibo or as Skylanders by twisting their bases to the correct setting. To see them in action check out the trailer below.
