Nintendo America President Reggie Fils-Aime To Retire: Doug Bowser Named New President

After more than 15 notable years at Nintendo of America, and nearly 13 as its President and COO, Reggie Fils-Aime will retire. His last day with Nintendo will be April 15. Doug Bowser, NOA’s current Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing, will then succeed Reggie as President of Nintendo of America.

“I really appreciate everything Reggie has done for Nintendo,” said Shuntaro Furukawa, President of Nintendo Co., Ltd. “Inside and outside our company, Reggie is known as an exceptional leader. We are grateful that he is leaving the business in good shape with strong momentum. While we will miss him and we wish him the very best in his retirement, we are also pleased to have such an able successor ready to step into that role. Doug Bowser and the rest of the team will ensure a seamless transition and continued momentum for Nintendo.”
“Nintendo owns a part of my heart forever,” Fils-Aime said. “It’s a part that is filled with gratitude – for the incredibly talented people I’ve worked with, for the opportunity to represent such a wonderful brand, and most of all, to feel like a member of the world’s most positive and enduring gamer community. As I look forward to departing in both good health and good humor, this is not ‘game over’ for me, but instead ‘leveling up’ to more time with my wife, family and friends.”
“It has been my great fortune to work with and be mentored by Reggie for four years at Nintendo of America,” Bowser said. “And rest assured, we will continue to build on his work to evolve and expand our brand, furthering Nintendo’s global mission of creating smiles. There are millions more of those to come.”

Fils-Aime started at Nintendo of America in 2003 as its Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing and became its President and COO in May 2006. His time with Nintendo began during the Nintendo GameCube and Game Boy Advance era. His leadership of Nintendo’s largest territory expanded the audience for Nintendo products as phenomena like NintendogsBrain AgeWii Sports and Wii Fit brought millions of new players to the world of video games. Fils-Aime’s management led to record-breaking sales for products like the Nintendo DS, Wii, Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Switch systems. At the same time, he communicated innovative new product features to a mass audience via his strong and affable personality, making him a favorite of media, members of the video game industry and Nintendo fans alike.
During his tenure, Nintendo of America has expanded its physical presence in the U.S., having established a key sales and marketing office in Redwood City, California, and built a new NOA headquarters in Redmond, Washington, that has received awards for its environmentally friendly design.
Bowser is an industry veteran who joined NOA in May 2015 as the Vice President of Sales before being promoted to Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing the next year. During his time at NOA, Bowser led the sales and marketing efforts for Nintendo Switch, which became the fastest-selling video game system of this hardware generation through 21 months, according to The NPD Group. Previously, Bowser was an executive with industry powerhouse Electronic Arts, most recently as the company’s Vice President of Global Business Planning. He also worked at Procter & Gamble in various sales leadership roles in Asia, Latin America and the U.S.

60% Of Nintendos Revenue Comes From Lead Up To Christmas

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime recently took part in an interview with Yahoo Finance. Reggie told the site that around 60% of Nintendo‘s revenue comes during the 3 months leading up the Christmas. The company will be hoping that the Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals will contribute to this.
“The holiday selling season — October, November and December — critically important to our company.  We typically do, in the Americas, about 60% of our revenue during that time frame. The reason that it’s so significant is first, our products make great gifts. Whether you’re talking about Nintendo Switch, whether you’re talking about Nintendo 2DS, we really do well with that gift- giving occasion,” Fils-Aime said.

Reggie Fils-Aime Says Why Metroid Prime 4 Was A No Show At E3 2018

A number of Nintendo fans were hoping to see Metroid Prime 4 at E3 2018, but the long-awaited sequel was a no-show at the expo. Nonetheless, its absence is a popular topic among gaming journalists and the community in general. Speaking with Polygon, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime suggested that it wouldn’t have been the right time to showcase the game due to it being far away from launch.
“We believe it is not fair to the fan to repeatedly tease them over time about a game,” Fils-Aime said. “That’s why we tend to focus close in, typically in a six- to nine-month timeframe, and go deep in sharing content and information on a particular piece of content. But right now, for something that’s not launching in 2018, it just wasn’t the right time.”

Nintendo Focussing On Nintendo 3DS For Those Who Are New To Nintendo

In an interview with TIME, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime mainly spoke about Super Mario Odyssey. However, Fils-Aime also said that the Nintendo 3DS is now really focused at new consumers in the Nintendo family which explains the budget priced New Nintendo 2DS XL.
“The Nintendo Switch, being a system that’s been in the marketplace now only seven months, certainly that’s a system that our teams will continue to develop for and bring fantastic new experiences. We have to do that to keep driving that platform forward. We view the 3DS as a very important part of our lineup, but really targeted against a different consumer. That product is really focused against new consumers in the Nintendo family, [such as] five, six, seven or 10-year olds [who want] their own dedicated system. And a system [on which] they can play all of these great games. So it’s going to have a different focus: entry consumers and consumers looking for a little bit more value.”

“So that’s how they’re differentiated. There will be new games for the 3DS line, so we’re not in any way stopping our activity for that platform. But it’s just focused on a different type of consumer.”

Nintendo America President Reggie Fils-Aime Talks About All Things Nintendo

Nintendo America President Reggie Fils-Aime was recently interviewed by TV personality and tech expert Katie Linendoll. In the 20 minute sit-down, Reggie touches on some interesting topics like when he first joined Nintendo in 2003 and immediately felt the pressure from the PSP launch. Obviously very optimistic about the future of the Nintendo Switch, Fils-Aime goes on to explain about the strong release of the console and also hinted at some more surprises for 3DS. Below is a brief run-down of what the president spoke about (courtesy of NeoGAF member LordKano)
  • Reggie has data for the five first day of sales for the Switch (US), it’s still the best-selling Nintendo system on that time.
  • He was asked the question about why are some games priced more on Switch than on other systems (likely referring to RiME), he just said that it was a third-party decision and Nintendo is not involved in that case.
  • He talks about Zelda sales in Japan, and said that, usually Zelda is more of a western IP and isn’t selling that well in Japan, but this time the game is “killing it” in every territory.
  • Cloud saves. He said “wouldn’t that be wonderful ? Stay tuned.”
  • He was asked about Animal Crossing, Smash Bros and various games. To Super Smash Bros, he specifically answered that “our philosophy at Nintendo is to have one great experience of each franchise on each console. So, in the future, who knows when, you can anticipate that all our big franchises will be addressed”.
  • He talks about when he entered the company, in December 2003 and how he felt pressure about the PSP announcement a few months earlier from Sony.
  • He says that he’s constantly being asked if his body is ready, even when he travels for personal stuff.
  • More surprise to come concerning 3DS.

“From a first-party standpoint, there’s no new development coming after the launch of the legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild,” he said. “We really are at the end of life for Wii U. “From our standpoint, sunsetting is quite some time into the future. The ongoing activity from an online standpoint on [Mario] Kart and Splatoon is significant. We’re going to continue to support that.”

Reggie Fils-Aime Gives 2 Reasons Why Nintendo Switch Won’t Struggle Like Wii U

After the Wii U, some gamers are cautious about the Nintendo Switch. Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime recently spoke to GameSpot and his message should alleviate fans fears and says that the console will not have the same struggle on its hands as the Wii U did. Reggie says that firstly marketing for the console is clear and on point and secondly the Kyoto based company will have games coming out frequently.
“Nintendo Switch is a home console you can play anywhere, with anyone. Clear. Compelling,” he said. “We see the reaction by consumers whether it’s measured in Twitter trending topics or views of videos on YouTube or just the frequency with which I get called by old high school buddies that I haven’t heard from in 30 years who are asking me how to get their hands on Nintendo Switch. We have communicated the proposition clearly and it is compelling.”
The second piece, that of strong games coming out frequently, is a “critical” component to selling Switch consoles and to keep existing users engaged, Fils-Aime said.

“Wii U will go down as having fantastic content–the issue was as you look at the reality of exactly when the games were launched, there were large gaps in between.” Thoughts ? I feel like the Switch is a step in the right direction and down the line it will be a great console.
