In an interview with IGN, Nintendo Of America President Reggie Fils-Aime says that they plan to continue supporting the console beyond 2018.
“The way we continue to make Nintendo 3DS vibrant as a platform is first we continue to innovate from form factor standpoint. So the New 2DS XL is just the latest for us in having form factor innovation. We know colors are a key differentiator, consumers love the variety of different colors. And also the larger screen and the different form factor in the 2DS family, we think is a going to drive and continue to drive the 3DS platform.”
“We’re going to continue to bring new content, and that’s what’s going to keep this device vibrant and keep it going well into 2018 and beyond.”
“We say that it’s a home console that you take with you and play with anyone, anywhere, anytime. It really is meant to deliver that great home console performance, you just happen to be able to undock it and take it with you, which is a key innovation,” Fils-Aime said. “But look, in the end, what we want is we want the consumer to call it their device, right? Their preferred gaming device that they can play fantastic Zelda, Mario, third-party content, all of their favorite franchises brought to life on the platform. That’s what we want. And we’re greedy and we want Nintendo 3DS right alongside it.”
Nintendo has announced a Metroid: Samus Returns themed “New” Nintendo 3DS XL. The console will be available on September 15th for $199.99.

Nintendo Japan has announced that the special edition Super Famicom New Nintendo 3DS XL is available for pre-order. The Super Famicom Edition New 3DS XL costs 21,600 yen and 514 yen for shipping. You’ll have until April 27 at 11:59 AM JST to put in a pre-order. Included in the box is The Super Famicom Edition New 3DS XL hardware, theme download code, a stylus, a 4GB micro SDHC memory card, AR cards, easy start guide, user manual, and warranty certificate. 
During the Nintendo Direct for Japan, Nintendo announced a Super Famicom (Super Nintendo for those outside of Japan) New 3DS XL is coming to Japan. According to the pictures, the 3DS comes with the monochrome color scheme based on the controller for the system. The back of the 3DS includes fake power, reset, and eject buttons, as well as the "Nintendo Super Famicom" logo. The new 3DS will cost 20,000 yen and will only be realized i Japan. A Release date is not known at this time. Why does Japan get all of the cool stuff ? Hope something like this comes to the west. What do you think of this Super Famicom New 3DS XL ? 
During todays Nintendo Direct, Nintendo has revealed that a number of Super Nintendo games are heading to the 3DS eShop. Games like Super Mario World, The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past and Super Metroid will soon be available to “New” Nintendo 3DS owners and only the “New” 3DS’s (Sigh). To celebrate the release of Hyrule Warriors Legends, Nintendo is bringing the Hyrule Edition New 3DS XL to Europe on March 24, 2016. Hyrule Warriors Legends releases on the same day. Though, the game isn't included. The 3DS hasn't been priced yet, but here in the US, where we've had the limited-edition handheld available since October 2015, it costs $200. If you haven’t picked up a 3DS yet, you can’t go wrong with the Hyrule Edition.
